Validation of European Patents in Tunisia

As of 1 December 2017, a validation agreement between the EPO and the Tunisian Patent Office (INNORPI) will enter into force, by which it will be possible to validate European patents in Tunisia.

Validation shall be requested by the applicant and will be only available for European or international applications filed on or after the above-mentioned date. The validation fee (presumably in the range of 200 – 250 Eur) must be paid to the EPO within six months of the date on which the European Patent Bulletin mentions the publication of the European search report, or, where applicable, when entering the European regional phase.

This development is the result of a bilateral agreement between both Offices originally signed by in July 2014, making Tunisia the third country with a validation agreement with the EPO. Similar bilateral agreements with Morocco and Moldova came into force on 1 March 2015 and on 1 November 2015, respectively.

The validation agreement with Tunisia brings to 43 the number of countries where an invention can be protected through the European examination and grant procedure.

The official announcement was published on the EPO website at: http://www.epo.org/news-issues/news/2017/20171004.html
